Tesco opens its 100th store in Turkey
on December 10th, 2008 at 1:00 pmTesco has today opened its 100th store in Turkey, just five years after entering the market when it bought a chain of five Kipa hypermarkets.
The Kipa store has opened in the coastal town of Yalova, and takes Tesco’s total number of stores in Central and Eastern Europe to 750. It is part of the shopping mall in Yalova built by Tesco.
The Kipa stores include elements of a Tesco store, such as a focus on price and range, and unique elements to the market including bakeries producing fresh baklava, a traditional Turkish sweet. Kipa also operates 58 Express stores and earlier this year opened its first 1,000 sq m store.
Tesco international and IT director Philip Clarke said: “Turkey is a really exciting market for Tesco with huge opportunities for growth. We’ve built up a strong local business from a small base and have moved to new areas like Antalya, Bodrum and Istanbul.”
