SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) – The Penn Traffic Co. is closing five underperforming supermarkets as it continues trying to improve its financial position.

The stores include P&C supermarkets in Plattsburgh and Horseheads and three BiLo supermarkets in the Pennsylvania cities of Erie, Somerset, and Altoona. The final day of operation for all five is Feb. 23.

The announcement Friday comes just a month after the company shut its Penny Curtiss commercial bakery, eliminating about 160 jobs.

Penn Traffic, which emerged from bankruptcy reorganization in April 2005, currently operates 103 supermarkets in four states
