Reliance Retail plans to pull out of Uttar Pradesh, sources said. The company had an investment plan of Rs 9,000 crore for UP off which Rs 3,000 crore has already invested.

The retail venture has 30 stores in UP while it had planned on opening 1,500.

 

Reliance Retail seems to be getting ready to down shutters in Uttar Pradesh. More than 800 employees have been relieved of their duties.

Reports say the employees have been assured that they will be recruited back once Reliance Fresh is given permission to operate in UP. This does not include outlets in Noida and Ghaziabad.

Meanwhile, the state government shut down five Reliance Fresh outlets in Noida on Sunday fearing public disorder. For now, the government says the Reliance Fresh stores will remain closed till September 30.

It is not just Noida and Ghaziabad, the government has also shut Reliance Fresh stores in Varanasi and Lucknow after farmers and small traders ransacked these stores. Reliance Retail stores across the country have been in the eye of storm of late. Stores in East Delhi and Bhubaneshwar had to be shut after they were attacked by traders.
